The results found the worst time for verbal abuse was just before lunch, and the worst day of the week Monday. Year 10 pupils were those most likely to swear.

Retail union Usdaw is horrified that the latest British Retail Consortium crime survey has revealed another steep rise in violence inflicted on shopworkers.
The Retail Crime Survey for 2004 revealed the worse figures for over a decade showing that physical violence against staff was up by an alarming 14% since 2003 and verbal abuse rose by a staggering 35%.
“These figures are very disturbing as it seems a small section of criminals and irresponsible consumers think shopworkers can be treated as physical and verbal punchbags,” says Usdaw General Secretary John Hannett. “We’ve been running a hugely successful Freedom From Fear campaign designed to combat these problems so it’s frightening to think that the problem could be even worse without our efforts.”
Janice Smyth, from the Royal College of Nursing, said that the attacks were totally unacceptable and required urgent action. "The RCN has for some time been drawing attention to the unacceptably high level of attacks on health service staff but our members will be outraged to note the staggering number of attacks on nurses," Ms Smyth said. "The time for well-meaning words of reproach is over."

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is frequently asked these questions. There is no single answer; it will depend on the findings of risk assessment but often the answer will be yes. This leaflet will help anyone who employs or engages lone workers. The leaflet gives general guidance on working alone. It offers advice on how to comply with duties towards lone workers under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 (HSW Act) and the Management of Health and Safety at Work (MHSW) Regulations 1999.

These responsibilities cannot be transferred to people who work alone. It is the employer’s duty to assess risks to lone workers and take steps to avoid or control risk where necessary.
