Patrick Dealtry appointed Chair of BSIA’s new Lone Worker Section

The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) launched its newest section of membership at IFSEC International last week in recognition of the growing market for lone worker protection products and services.

Officially launched by Rachel Griffin, Chair of personal safety charity, The Suzy Lamplugh Trust, the BSIA’s Lone Worker Section represents companies operating in the lone worker protection market, all of which are accredited or working towards accreditation to the lone worker standard, BS8484.

The event brought together professionals from across the security industry and also featured the election and announcement of the first official Section Chairman, Patrick Dealtry. Commenting on his election, Patrick said: “The lone worker market has grown rapidly in recent years thanks to the demand from customers recognising the value provided by companies offering services in this market. In addition, we recognise the growing effort among customers to satisfy their duty of care to their employees, often in very difficult circumstances. Today represents a milestone and reflects the success of BSIA companies in supplying these services. I am very pleased to have been elected Chairman and look forward to representing the interests of companies in the market with which I have been associated for over ten years.”

Craig Swallow, Managing Director of Connexion2, was appointed the group Vice Chair.

Ian Johannessen, Managing Director, Rocksure Systems, congratulated both Patrick and Craig on their appointments. He also commented, “We have made good progress over the past 3 to 4 years yet it is obvious that the lone worker safety and security market has further opportunity to develop even more.

There is still work to do on standards for quality and education for buyers and generally ensuring that there is a deep vein of collaboration across both industries and stakeholders to ensure the market achieves its full potential. The establishment of the lone worker section gives us every opportunity to achieve these objectives."

The BSIA Lone Worker Section  Committee comprises 8 people from the lone worker industry including Ian Johannessen from Rocksure Systems. For more information about the BSIA’s lone worker protection section visit www.bsia.co.uk/lone-worker

Three Housing Associations address staff safety concerns by bringing in Peoplesafe to protect their Public Facing Lone Workers

Aster Communities, which provides affordable properties for rent and community services to over 40,000 customers across central southern and south west England, Paradigm whose staff currently manage more than 12,500 homes throughout the south, east midlands and west London and Ocean Housing who provide homes for around 4,000 families have all selected Peoplesafe’s NSI Gold Lone Worker Service to protect their public facing lone working staff.

Peoplesafe is increasingly the choice of Housing Associations’ who are looking for the highest quality of service for their most vulnerable front line staff.

All three Housing Associations have selected the Identicom device, which is the leading, dedicated lone worker device with more than 100,000 users worldwide. It was also the first dedicated lone worker device to achieve Police approval through ACPO.

For an all inclusive price, the lone worker service provided by Peoplesafe includes the device, 24/7 manned monitoring, SIM, face to face user training, monthly reporting and a dedicated Account Manager and customer support team at implementation and throughout the duration of the contract.

Peoplesafe provide the Identicom as part of its core service, widely recognised as the most effective and appropriate device when facing the public. In assessing the market continually for the best device to use Peoplesafe have determined that the quality of components, supply chain reliability and ease of use create a clear difference in service quality. The results are not just seen on paper but a clear distinction in the daily experiences of the lone workers who interact with the service.

The Identicom device also uniquely combines GPS and Man Down technology which allows all staff to be instantly located and also protects staff if they have a slip, trip or fall and are unable to summon for help as the device will automatically issue a Red Alert to the ARC.

Ian Johannessen, Managing Director, Peoplesafe commented “ In 2012, Inside Housing reported a 35% increase in assaults on housing workers. Within the report they stated that “the most important things landlords can do is to have lone worker policies in place.....” Couple this with housing staff’s increased safety concerns as a result of the Welfare Reform Bill then much more needs to be done to protect front line staff.”

Since this report and the planned introduction of the Universal Credit System we have seen an ever increasing interest from housing associations looking to update their protection for their lone workers. Most are looking for more robust systems which not only meet the stringent standards laid out in BS8484 but provide staff with confidence in the daily use of their lone worker device.

With Peoplesafe, our clients are safe in the knowledge that their staff are using a NSI Gold Standard lone worker service and can use the Red Alert button when they feel unsafe or threatened knowing that they can instantly get support and if necessary a Police response should they feel threatened.

Peoplesafe, the lone worker experts, ready for both the S&H and IFSEC Exhibitions

Peoplesafe confirms that we will be exhibiting at this year’s Safety and Health Expo at the NEC. Located in Hall 1 on Stand D21 we will showcase our range of BS8484 approved lone worker devices and services which enable a guaranteed police escalation, where appropriate, for all lone workers.

On Tuesday 14th May we will also be presenting with Moss Care Housing at the Arco Academy to share best practice on successful implementation and management of an effective lone system within Housing Associations.

Also on the 14th May Peoplesafe will be presenting in the Lone Worker Education Theatre with Gordon Ross from BTS, to share how the social housing sector is responding to the challenges faced by its front line lone working staff.

Peoplesafe will be demonstrating the latest versions of its application that works with all Smart phones commonly available in the market. So Windows Mobile and iOS will join the Android version of the lone worker application already available. Also the application is able to detect man-down events - this significant enhancement makes the Smart phone a real option for lone workers in a fixed/large site environment. Visit our stand to take away a working demonstration for your phone.

In addition to presenting our full range of lone worker solutions, we will also introduce the new Identicom 8 Series, with its enhanced functionality and the new 877c, which is the first dedicated lone worker device to feature a camera function. Arguably the most significant improvement with the 8 Series it is capability to configure either one or two way audio.

The Identicom 877c retains the core functionality of the standard 877 as a two-way audio, lone worker device but also allows workers to capture photographs that are then automatically uploaded to the to the Peoplesafe Vision platform. The 877c will also enable some lone workers to reduce the number of devices they have to carry providing significant costs savings for employers.

Together with the Peoplesafe lone worker service, the 8 Series will offer our clients even more choice and flexibility when working with us to select the most appropriate lone worker device for their needs.

Safety and Health Expo takes place in Birmingham at the NEC from the 14th to the 16th May 2013.

Peoplesafe continue to protect Octavia Housing’s Lone Workers

Octavia Housing is a forward thinking, not for profit organisation with a strong track record in social housing and providing care services. Octavia provide and manage a portfolio of more than 4000 good quality affordable homes in inner London.

Octavia is an organisation with strong values, founded by Octavia Hill, the Victorian philanthropist and social reformer, whose ideas formed the basis of the profession of housing management.

Since 2011, Octavia Housing has chosen Peoplesafe’s NSI Gold Lone Worker Service to protect more than 30% of its employees. Peoplesafe have provided Octavia with the market leading Identicom device for a range of its employees including Estate Service Officers, Sales Negotiators, Neighbourhood Officers and Building Service Engineers. Octavia decided that as most of these staff are public facing and work in environments where they meet and face the general public on a daily basis, often in various locations that they needed additional support whilst carrying out their duties.

After a period of review Octavia chose Peoplesafe as its lone worker provider because it was able to provide a solution that was best suited to the associations needs and assist it in meeting its commitments to protect the health and safety of its employees.

The lone worker service provided by Peoplesafe allows the user to leave details of their movements and whereabouts via their Identicom device. The Identicom has been designed for ease of use, so that users can quickly and easily enter their details, which can then be accessed by Peoplesafe’s Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) should there be a subsequent Red Alert. The device also allows a member of staff at the ARC to discreetly listen in should a Red Alert be activated and then make an assessment as to what level of assistance is required including, if necessary, a guaranteed Police response.

The Identicom device also has GPS and Man Down technology which allows staff to be instantly located and also protects them should they have a fall and are unable to summon for help.

Mary Lambert, Health and Safety Officer at Octavia Housing commented, “We chose the Peoplesafe Lone Worker Service because of the greater functionality it provided and coupled with a roaming SIM card made it even safer for our lone workers and much more accurate. Peoplesafe have trained all our staff on how to use the devices correctly and our dedicated Account Manager at Peoplesafe proactively monitors the usage levels amongst my team.”

Ian Johannessen, Managing Director at Peoplesafe added, “Peoplesafe is the only Lone Worker provider in the UK to be accredited to NSI Gold standard. Being awarded this standard means that Peoplesafe work to the highest industry standards, ensuring that Octavia and all of our other customers can have the peace of mind that they are being provided with the highest quality lone worker service in the UK.”

“We are proud to be associated with Octavia Housing and are pleased to be supporting them in the protection of their employees. It is becoming apparent that the social housing sector sees the use of a credible lone worker safety system as ‘best practice’ when ensuring the safety of its staff” .

About Octavia Housing

Octavia was founded upon the principles that reliable housing and mixed communities matter. We provide and manage a portfolio of 4,000 good quality affordable homes in inner London, the most expensive part of the country.  Through this we enable people to live in areas from which they would otherwise be excluded and thereby help keep London a mixed community.
